Most Melbourne companies in this market do not publish a price at all. Of the eight checked in September 2026, seven required a phone call or a site visit to find out what the job costs, and the one that publishes a fixed price adds a booking fee on top of the advertised figure.

What is actually in the price
A whole-house filter install is four things, and it is worth seeing them separately because the difference between quotes is almost never the filter.
The system. Three housings, the cartridges in them, the bracket and the isolation valves. On a domestic three-stage system in 20" x 4.5" housings this is the smaller half of the cost.
The plumbing labour. A licensed plumber, two to three hours on site for a standard install within 1.5 metres of the meter. Labour-only rates for a whole-house filter install in Melbourne run roughly $650 to $1,000.

This is a real option and it is usually the cheapest on paper. A domestic three-stage system bought retail runs a few hundred dollars, and a licensed plumber to fit it runs roughly $650 to $1,000. So the parts-plus-plumber path lands somewhere around $1,100 to $1,500 in Melbourne.
What you give up is that nobody owns the finished job. The retailer warrants the box, the plumber warrants the joints, and if the taste is still wrong in a month there is no single party responsible for the outcome. Why the advertised price is the one you pay
